Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Aviation City Corporation (DACC), has signed a contract for the expansion and enhancement of the bridge leading to Terminal 1 of DACC.

This project is intended to improve traffic flow, minimise journey time and accommodate rising passenger numbers, which surpassed 92 million in 2024.

The project will expand the current bridge from three lanes to four, using a steel box girder system combined with a composite concrete slab.

Roads and Transport Authority director general, chairman of the board of executive directors His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer said: “This engineering solution was selected for its high structural efficiency, enabling delivery within a short timeframe, without the need for traffic diversions on Airport Street or temporary supports beneath the bridge, thereby ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow and the highest safety standards.

“The bridge expansion is part of RTA’s continuous efforts to improve traffic flow and strengthen connectivity between major corridors and vital facilities, most notably Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest airport for international passengers. The expansion will boost street capacity, improve safety, and shorten journey times during peak hours.”

The bridge will measure a total of 171m in length, which encompasses its ramps, while the central span will be 70m long.

This project also entails enhancements to road surfaces and infrastructure services, and landscaping efforts to harmonise with the adjacent infrastructure. Furthermore, new street lighting will be installed to improve safety and visibility.

The upgrade is expected to boost the bridge's capacity from 4,200 to 5,600 vehicles per hour, representing a 33% increase.

Previously, RTA undertook works on Airport Street from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Casablanca Street.

This project included building bridges, tunnels, and modifying intersections to facilitate access to DACC.

The project also constructed a single-lane bridge for direct access to Terminal 3, a bridge to the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP) complex, and another single-lane bridge for traffic from Airport Street to Casablanca Street.

Additionally, Casablanca Street was expanded from three to four lanes towards Al Garhoud Bridge.
