The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) in the US has selected Aecom for the designing of cloudburst flooding mitigation strategies.

Aecom will offer its design services for the programme in the city to reduce nuisance flooding events in specifically at-risk areas.

As part of the seven-year order, the company will deploy integrated flood reduction systems for managing stormwater during extreme weather.

This will strengthen the resilience of social, environmental, and economic systems, as well as lower the impacts on the natural environment and improve public spaces.

Aecom will provide grey and green infrastructure capabilities to the NYCDEP.

Services to be provided will consist of project planning, assessments and permitting, and the engineering and design of landscape architecture.

Other services will include hydrologic and hydraulic modelling, resident engagement, benefit-cost analysis, and bidding support.

Aecom Water's CEO Beverley Stinson said: “Aecom is at the forefront of climate change adaptation and has successfully implemented stormwater cloudburst strategies and designs to mitigate localised and widespread flooding in some of the nation’s most challenging environments.

“We’re honoured to help the City of New York implement an array of resilient practices to bring wide-ranging environmental benefits to its many diverse communities.”

Cloudburst management typically encompasses the design and deployment of several integrated elements for absorbing, storing, and shifting stormwater in a particular geographical location or neighbourhood.
