The state government of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has announced the start of construction on a new 7,000m² facility in Bradfield City and approved an A$1bn ($698m) industrial estate, Burrah Park, within the Aerotropolis precinct.

These decisions mark a significant step forward in the transformation of Western Sydney Aerotropolis and Bradfield City.

The Bradfield City project, referred to as the Second Building, is intended to boost local manufacturing capability and attract advanced industries to the region.

It will house what is described as Australia's first commercial Semiconductor Advanced Packaging Facility, enabling domestic businesses to access high-level semiconductor packaging, micro-electronics and precision manufacturing services.

The facility is among only about 13 such centres worldwide, according to the announcement.

The planned building will include ISO 5 cleanroom laboratories, advanced microscopy, taping, electronics and dicing capabilities.

The facility aims to support growth in quantum computing, sensing, photonics, communications and medical technology sectors.

Additionally, the Second Building will feature a new advanced manufacturing hall and offer office and collaboration space for enterprises operating in high-growth sectors.

The total investment across the initial Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) and the Second Building is A$300m from the NSW government.

The Second Building is being delivered by Hansen Yuncken, located adjacent to the first AMRF in the centre of Bradfield City.

Meanwhile, the Burrah Park industrial estate, jointly owned by IFM Investors and Uni Super, has secured planning approval. It is reported to be the largest industrial development approved in the Aerotropolis so far.

The estate is designed to create more than 6,300 ongoing jobs in logistics, freight, advanced manufacturing and high-technology industries by 2032.

DHL Supply Chain (Australia) has committed to establishing a full-time warehouse and distribution operation within the estate.

As part of the proposal, 26ha will be set aside for parklands accessible to workers and the community.

NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said: “By delivering ambitious projects like the Second Building to house Australia's first commercial Semiconductor Advanced Packaging Facility, Bradfield City is creating the conditions for advanced industries to invest, innovate and grow in Western Sydney.

“Projects like these demonstrate how Bradfield City and Aerotropolis are places where businesses can expand right in the heart of Western Sydney, close to a talented, skilled and diverse workforce, supported by world-class infrastructure and growing industry capability.”

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said: “These investments are driving the creation of jobs, industries and economic opportunities where local residents can build their careers closer to home.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a brand-new city from the ground up, and we’re attracting investment and industries that will benefit the region for generations to come.”

The Aerotropolis precinct comprises 11,200ha and has received more than A$25bn in joint government investment for infrastructure, including the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, set to open this month.
