Construction has commenced on the A$950.6m ($668.2m) New Mandurah Hospital in Western Australia (WA), following the awarding of the main works contract to Sydney-based Built and Sacyr Construction.

The facility, developed on land adjacent to the Peel Health Campus, is part of the government’s A$5.5bn investment in health infrastructure.

The new hospital aims to address increasing healthcare demand driven by significant population growth in Mandurah and across the wider Peel region.

According to the Western Australian government, the project will replace current services offered at Peel Health Campus with new, purpose-built facilities and substantially expand public healthcare capacity.

Once complete, the New Mandurah Hospital will feature a range of services, including an emergency department, Mental Health Emergency Centre, chemotherapy, renal services, perioperative facilities, maternity and women’s wards, and palliative care.

The project is expected to add more than 110 beds to the state health system, with a dedicated mental health centre offering specialised support for acute mental health cases.

Plans also include a larger emergency department designed to accommodate more treatment bays and expanded short-stay capacity to facilitate faster service delivery.

Enabling works, including the installation of site utility services, earthworks and staff parking, have already begun.

The awarding of the main works contract marks a significant milestone, allowing full construction activities to proceed on the site.

Western Australia Health Minister Meredith Hammat said: "We're investing in our future and making sure WA remains the best place in the world to live now and for generations to come. The New Mandurah Hospital will help deliver that by providing additional beds, a larger emergency department, dedicated mental health facilities, maternity and outpatient services, so more people can receive comprehensive care in their own community.”

The New Mandurah Hospital development accompanies other recent health service expansions in the region, including the Peel Community Mental Health Service and Kara Maar Specialist Community Eating Disorder Service in Greenfields.

Both contribute to increasing access to mental health and community support services locally.
