Australian construction company Multiplex has finished building the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) terminal in Badgerys Creek.

The project was undertaken for the Western Sydney Airport Corporation.

The terminal was designed by architects Zaha Hadid and COX Architecture.

It spans four levels and is built to accommodate ten million passengers annually, the company said.

Multiplex, in a statement, said it collaborated with consultants, including Airbiz and Woods Bagot, to develop an optimised design for the terminal and its surrounding infrastructure.

Construction planning began alongside site works, with the entire project taking nearly four years to complete.

The company highlighted the 'highly technical' nature of the build, which posed several challenges.

Multiplex’s New South Wales (NSW) regional managing director David Ghannoum said: “Western Sydney International Airport is a once-in-a-lifetime project. It has created a new world-class gateway to Sydney for domestic and international travellers.

“The completion of this highly technical build is also a significant milestone for Multiplex, as the largest project we have delivered in NSW in Multiplex’s 60-plus-year history,”

To meet the delivery schedule, Multiplex used a ‘Slimdek 210’ flooring solution for Levels 2 and 3, a composite steel frame produced locally by BlueScope Steel.

This approach reduced the need for concrete and labour, allowing the installation of the baggage handling system to start months earlier than planned, the statement added.

Additionally, Multiplex employed a prefabricated service riser system in the main terminal, enabling each core to be installed in a single day.

The WSI is the first major airport constructed in Sydney in over a century and will operate as the city’s only 24-hour airport.

Western Sydney International Airport’s CEO Simon Hickey said: “We are on the precipice of launching a seamless and stress-free airport experience unlike any other in Australia. WSI will give our global city a 24-hour international gateway that will continue to create significant economic opportunities for all of Greater Sydney.”

Recently, CPB Contractors, part of the CIMIC Group, in a joint venture with Acciona, has completed the Airside Civil and Pavement works package for WSI, leading to the official certification of the airport's runway and key airside facilities.
