Australia's Queensland Government has appointed Multiplex to build the new Coomera Hospital, a 600-bed facility valued at A$2.3bn ($1.6bn).
Located in the northern Gold Coast, the project forms part of the state government’s Hospital Rescue Plan, which aims to address rising healthcare needs in a rapidly growing community.
Early foundation work is already under way, including concrete pours and the remodelling of existing structures to accommodate the expanded site.
Civil works, such as building retaining walls, installing stormwater management tanks, and upgrading the car park, are expected to begin next month.
Main construction is scheduled to start once the formal contract with Multiplex is awarded in January 2027.
Plans for the hospital were revised after an independent review found that the earlier 400-bed proposal would not meet regional needs. As a result, the scope was expanded by 200 beds, increasing the planned capacity to 600.
The facility will be delivered in stages: the first 400 beds are expected to be completed in 2031, with the remaining 200 beds to follow in 2032.
The hospital will feature a 12-storey Clinical Services Building, housing an emergency department, operating theatres, an intensive care unit, and other inpatient facilities.
Stage one will comprise key health services while stage two will add day surgery facilities, oncology, a minor injuries clinic, dialysis, and palliative care.
Queensland premier David Crisafulli said: “The northern Gold Coast is one of the fastest-growing parts of Queensland, and we’re making sure families have access to health services when they need them, as their communities continue to grow.
“We’re delivering a bigger, better Coomera Hospital, with 200 more beds because Queenslanders deserve easier access to health services and health infrastructure that keeps pace with population growth.”
The Coomera Hospital is one of three new hospitals under the Hospital Rescue Plan, which is set to deliver more than 2,600 additional beds and expand ten existing facilities across Queensland.
Last month, Australia’s Sydney Airport selected Multiplex to undertake early contractor involvement works for the initial phase of its Eastern Expansion Programme, a project with an estimated cost exceeding A$3bn.
