Australia’s Sydney Airport has appointed Multiplex to carry out early contractor involvement (ECI) works for the first package of the airport’s Eastern Expansion Programme, which is expected to cost over A$3bn ($2.14bn).
This development marks a key phase in Sydney Airport’s long-term infrastructure strategy, aimed at addressing future growth in passenger and freight volumes.

The project forms the cornerstone of the airport’s Master Plan 2045 and is anticipated to be the site’s most significant redevelopment since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The expansion is planned to accommodate a projected increase in passengers from 42 million to over 72 million a year by 2045, alongside a forecast in freight volume rise to more than 1.4 million tonnes annually.
According to the airport, this growth could support an additional 1,500 jobs each year and boost total economic activity by 56% to around A$70bn.
Package 1 of the works includes redevelopment of terminals 2 and 3, new airside apron and taxiway infrastructure, upgrades to the baggage handling system, more car parking, and improved freight and logistics facilities.
The project also covers roads and related enabling works in the landside precinct.
Multiplex will work with Sydney Airport, architect Grimshaw, engineering company Mott MacDonald, and other stakeholders to advance planning, manage risk, and identify delivery opportunities in a live operational environment.
Sydney Airport planning and delivery group executive Paul Willis said: “Bringing Multiplex into the project at this stage gives us valuable construction and delivery expertise as we continue to develop the major development plan.
“Early collaboration between the airport, designers and contractor will help us test how the project can be built and staged safely and efficiently, while minimising impacts on passengers, airlines and airport operations.
“Multiplex has a strong track record delivering complex infrastructure and major projects, and we look forward to working together to progress a terminal development that supports Sydney Airport’s long-term growth and delivers a better experience for passengers and airlines.”
Construction of the ECI package is due to begin this month, with major building works scheduled for 2027 and overall completion expected in the early 2030s.
The redevelopment is part of a wider A$6bn capital works programme over the next five years.
Earlier this month, Multiplex was appointed as the principal contractor for 99 City Road, a planned 36-storey commercial building located at the junction of Old Street and the City of London, UK.
