Major works begin on METRONET Midland Station in Western Australia

The current 55-year-old station is set to be demolished after its services are relocated to the METRONET site.

July 24 2023

The Government of Western Australia has announced the commencement of significant construction works on the new METRONET Midland Station in the region.

This project intends to deliver a train station to meet the local community’s requirements.

The scope of the project involves the construction of a three-platform station between Helena Street and Cale Street, which will offer convenient access to the Midland Gate shopping centre and Midland Health hospital campus.

Additionally, this new station will feature a 12-stand bus interchange, a multistorey car park with more than 800 spaces, and a bike storage area.

The western end of the station's current car park will be closed temporarily due to the first phase of the project focusing on this structure specifically.

To allow further construction of the new station, the car park at Railway Parade to the east of Helena Street will also be closed.

The current 55-year-old station will be decommissioned and demolished after train services are relocated to the new station. This relocation is expected to occur in early 2025.

Earlier this year, preliminary designs for the new station were unveiled, depicting a modern facility that also preserves local Noongar culture and terrain.

The Australian and Western Australian governments are jointly funding the $330m Midland Station project. It will be built by the Midland Junction Alliance, comprising McConnell Dowell Constructors, Georgiou Group, Arcadis Australia Pacific, and BG&E.

Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King said: “The Australian Government has committed $3.9bn to a number of METRONET projects to deliver vital transport infrastructure for Perth’s burgeoning suburbs to greatly improve services and travel times for local commuters.

“The METRONET partnership with the Western Australian Government will continue to boost the economy for years to come by providing long-term business opportunities, supporting the growth of vibrant urban centres through integrated transport and providing sustainable alternative transport options.”
