The Croatian subsidiary of STRABAG, a European construction group, has commenced the renovation and expansion of Kranjčevićeva Stadium in Zagreb, Croatia.

The project, valued at €38m ($43.2m), is expected to transform the venue into a modern football stadium with a capacity of 11,163 seats, all covered.

Construction on the stadium has begun, with the project expected to last approximately 18 months. Completion is targeted for the end of 2026.

This stadium will meet UEFA Category 4 standards, enabling it to host Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League matches.

The renovation comprises a complete overhaul of the existing structure to align with current construction and safety standards.

The upgraded stadium will feature a heated hybrid pitch, contemporary press rooms, and all the conveniences expected of a modern sports facility.

Additionally, it will incorporate energy-efficient solutions, enable full accessibility for individuals with disabilities, and feature advanced multimedia and security systems.

The Kranjčevićeva Stadium will become the home ground for GNK Dinamo Zagreb, the country's national team, and other clubs.

The project is a key part of Zagreb's substantial investment in sports infrastructure, which also includes the construction of a new swimming pool in the Špansko district by STRABAG.

Croatia is STRABAG's second-largest market in Southeast Europe, with an annual turnover exceeding €220m and a workforce of more than 1,300.

STRABAG SE, South + East Segment management board member Alfred Watzl said: “We are honoured to have been selected by the City of Zagreb to execute this landmark project. Having recently been awarded the contract for the modernisation of a 50km section of the Istrian railway line between Buzet and Sveti Petar u Šumi or the elderly care facility in Drniš, to name just two of our current Croatian projects, this new contract once again demonstrates our wide range of expertise for projects of all types and sizes.”

In February 2025, STRABAG Real Estate, the Stuttgart division of the Austrian construction company, acquired an 8,866m² site in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany, with plans to construct four residential buildings with 140 units on the former car park and revitalise the existing 13,800m² property.
