Kier has secured a £139m ($188.32m) contract to upgrade the Wanlip Sewage Treatment Works in Leicestershire, England, for Severn Trent.

The Wanlip Sewage Treatment Works upgrade will help meet the demands of 750,000 residents.

Severn Trent capital delivery and commercial director James Jesic said: "It’s exceedingly rare for us to award contracts of this size and it really speaks to the scale of these upgrades at Wanlip and our commitment to improving our infrastructure, delivering a reliable high-performing service for our customers, and protecting the environment."

The project aims to bolster treatment capabilities, enhance water quality, and fortify the site's resilience for the long term.

It will expand the facility's dry weather flow capacity by 24% and its full flow to treatment by approximately 20%.

As Severn Trent's third-largest wastewater treatment operation, the Wanlip upgrade is a key component of the company's broader Green Recovery initiative.

This project underscores a partnership exceeding two decades between the two entities.

The collaboration between Kier, Severn Trent, and other partners follows a successful initial phase that saw preparatory work and advanced design efforts.

The commencement of the project is set for later in 2025, with an expected completion in 2028.

This contract win bolsters Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks' role as a partner in the UK water sector.

The move follows a series of recent contract acquisitions and renewals with major domestic utilities by the company, including Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, United Utilities, Southern Water, and Anglian Water.

Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks group managing director Andrew Bradshaw said: “Our continued involvement as we move into the Asset Management Period 8 cycle reflects the strength and success of our longstanding relationship. We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to deliver critical infrastructure together."
