Transport company Ferrovial has been awarded a contract to expand the Llobregat-Anoia line of Barcelona’s Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) commuter rail system in Spain.

This €300m contract has been awarded by the Catalonia regional government’s Territory Department of Spain to Ferrovial in a consortium with Sacyr, Copisa and Copcisa.

The scope of the project involves the construction of a 4km tunnel and three new stations, along with the upgrade of two existing stations.

The primary aim of the development is to improve and increase public transit coverage in Barcelona by connecting numerous important facilities, including Hospital Clínic and the industrial engineering school.

Upon completion, the project is estimated to benefit approximately 19.5 million citizens annually.

The expansion works are set to begin within a few months' time and are expected to be completed within five years.

Additionally, the plan involves the construction of two emergency exits, one at the junction of Consell de Cent and Comte Urgell, and the other at the intersection of Muntaner and Mariá Cubí streets.

Three new stations will be built on the newly built stretch of line. The Gràcia and Plaça Espanya stations will be refurbished.

The second is the Llobregat-Anoia terminal, part of one of Barcelona’s primary transit interchanges, where numerous FGC lines and Barcelona's Metro lines 1 and 3 intersect.

Plaça Espanya Station will be upgraded via the extension of two of its four tracks, widening the vestibule, as well as rearranging various entrances and connections between floors.
