Construction has started on the new City Campus Student Accommodation at the University of Newcastle, Australia, with a ground-breaking ceremony held at the Civic Lane and Worth Place site.

The nine-storey building is designed by Architectus and will provide 445 beds across a mix of studios and twin rooms, along with six-bed shared apartments.

Each option will be equipped with kitchen and bathroom facilities, alongside shared lounges, outdoor terraces, laundry rooms, and dining areas.

The development will also feature indoor and outdoor communal areas to cater to students, as well as spaces for university support services.

Newcastle Member of Parliament Sharon Claydon said: “High-quality student accommodation is essential to attracting and supporting students from across Australia and the world.

“This development means students can live close to campus, close to work, and close to all that Newcastle has to offer.”

University of Newcastle vice-chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky, AO said: “Our new student accommodation will provide a lively, comfortable and supportive home away from home for both domestic and international students in the heart of Newcastle.

“As the university celebrates 60 years, the City Campus Student Accommodation is the next phase of our Honeysuckle site development and represents our ongoing commitment to improving the student experience.”

Hansen Yuncken is constructing the project, which is expected to be completed in early 2027.

The New South Wales Government granted formal approval to the University of Newcastle to proceed with the City Campus Student Accommodation construction in June 2025.
