Construction has commenced on a new multi-storey car park as part of the A$630m ($444m) Fairfield Hospital Redevelopment in Sydney, Australia.
The project marks a significant phase in the New South Wales (NSW) state government’s efforts to upgrade hospital infrastructure in the region.
Situated at the southern end of Fairfield Hospital, the new structure will offer more than 450 parking spaces and provide pedestrian access to both the existing hospital and nearby Braeside Hospital.
Rooftop solar panels are planned as part of the design to promote sustainable operations, and the facade has been created to complement the hospital’s existing buildings and surrounding natural environment.
Hindmarsh Construction has been contracted to deliver the multi-storey car park following a competitive tender process and receipt of the necessary planning approvals.
The expanded on-ground car park areas have already been completed and are in use to reduce parking disruption for patients, visitors and staff during construction.
The new car park and associated works are expected to continue through 2026 and are scheduled for completion in 2027.
This multi-storey car park is one component of the broader Fairfield Hospital Redevelopment. The project also features plans for a five-storey clinical services building.
The new facility will connect to the existing hospital and feature a new main entrance with a dedicated drop-off area.
Current planning and design activities envision expanded services, including a larger Emergency Department, an Intensive Care Unit, operating theatres, medical imaging and inpatient wards.
As part of the redevelopment, some existing departments are expected to be relocated or refurbished, although the final building design has not yet been confirmed.
NSW Minister for Health Ryan Park said: “We are getting on with the job and delivering the first major upgrade to Fairfield Hospital in decades.
“The Fairfield Hospital Redevelopment is part of the A$3.8bn being invested by the Minns Labor Government in western Sydney hospitals over the next four years.
“We are committed to delivering more staff and more health services for families across Sydney’s south-west, rebuilding the system after more than a decade of neglect from the Coalition.”
The NSW Government has allocated A$550m for the redevelopment, supplemented by A$80m in Commonwealth funding to support an expansion of the hospital’s emergency services.
The lead design team, including architect Architectus and project manager Turner & Townsend, was confirmed in September 2024.
