Bouygues Construction has won a €1.2bn ($1.3bn) contract to deliver the next phase of AirTrunk’s SYD3 data centre campus in Western Sydney.
The expansion will boost data storage and processing capacity to over 400MW, addressing surging demand for digital infrastructure from cloud computing, AI and enterprise digital services in Australia.
Work on the SYD3 project is scheduled to begin soon, with completion targeted for mid-2028.
Bouygues Construction states that the project will prioritise measures to minimise environmental impact during construction.
Plans include the use of low-carbon concrete and exclusively Australian-made steel reinforcement, with at least 86% of the reinforcement produced from recycled materials.
The project will also implement Site Cycle, a system for recovering, tracking and repurposing construction waste.
According to the company, Site Cycle enables real-time monitoring of waste and collaborates with manufacturers and recycling firms to convert recovered materials into new construction products, with a target of diverting 90% of non-hazardous construction waste from landfill.
The development will support approximately 10,000 jobs throughout the construction period.
Roles will span electrical, mechanical, civil trades, engineering, project management, logistics and site safety, the company said.

The SYD3 expansion is part of AirTrunk’s broader investment strategy in Australia. The company has already invested more than €6.4bn across four sites to date, with future commitments expected to reach €48bn nationally over the next decade.
Bouygues Construction secured the contract through its Australian subsidiary AW Edwards.
AW Edwards operates in New South Wales and has previously delivered major healthcare, transport and digital infrastructure projects, while Bouygues Construction Australia has contributed to civil works and renewable energy developments nationwide, including metro rail and large-scale solar projects.
