Balfour Beatty, along with Bouygues Travaux Publics and Laing O’Rourke, has signed an agreement with Sizewell C for delivering the main civil works at a new power station located in Suffolk, UK.

With the signing of the programme alliance agreement, the companies together form the Sizewell Civil Works Alliance (CWA).

This alliance aims to provide delivery certainty for this infrastructure project.

It will handle a wide range of tasks, including enabling works, marine and tunnelling operations, and ancillary works.

The CWA brings together the expertise of the three companies working at Hinkley Point C currently, enhancing Sizewell C's development with their skills.

Balfour Beatty Group chief executive Leo Quinn said: “Sizewell C represents a critical investment in Britain’s energy security and net-zero future.

“The signing of the programme alliance agreement further demonstrates the important role we continue to play in powering the UK's transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Construction at Sizewell C commenced in January 2024, achieving early milestones on schedule and within budget.

The project is anticipated to employ 7,900 people on-site during peak construction and support several jobs in the domestic supply chain.

Sizewell C joint managing director Nigel Cann said: “This agreement ensures that our civils programme will be delivered by three companies with deep experience of building to the highest nuclear standards.

"Hinkley Point C has done the heroic work to restart our industry and is seeing big improvements between the construction of reactor Unit 1 and Unit 2.”

The UK government recently announced £14.2bn ($19.47bn) investment in Sizewell C over five years. A final investment decision, detailing private investors, is expected in the coming months.

The move comes after Balfour Beatty secured a contract worth £833m from Technip Energies to serve as the construction partner for Net Zero Teesside Power in the UK.
