Arabian Gulf University (AGU) has signed a series of contracts to supply information technology systems and non-medical furniture for the $260m King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Medical City, a healthcare and academic facility near the Durrat Al Bahrain development.
The project is backed by Saudi Arabia through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD).
According to AGU, the new agreements include providing an integrated IT system and non-medical fittings for the medical city’s academic hospital.
The development aims to combine clinical care, medical education and research under one campus with a fully digitalised infrastructure.
One contract involves Kanoo Information Technology, which will deliver a comprehensive technology system consisting of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity measures, healthcare software, institutional systems and digital integration solutions.
The university said this arrangement is intended to ensure technical readiness and support the operation of facilities “in accordance with the latest international standards.”
A separate deal with Al-Salam Projects Company covers the supply and installation of non-medical equipment and interior furnishings for the medical city.
AGU stated these works are intended to prepare the various facilities for operation and provide modern, safe working environments.
The signing event was attended by several Bahraini ministers, the CEO of SFD, and senior officials, the university said.
In addition to the medical city, the university has initiated further contracts to improve facilities at its main campus and student accommodation in Al-Zalaq.
Naz Al-Khaleej Company will carry out an upgrade of the water network at student housing, including the construction of two water tanks with a 4,000m³ capacity each and infrastructure works across 20,000m².
Another contract involves installing electronic gate systems and access controls at student dormitory entrances, as well as constructing new buildings and air-conditioned bus waiting areas.
Plans to modernise sports and recreational facilities at the AGU Club in Al-Zalaq are also under way with Mohamed Jalal Contracting Company. The company will renovate the club’s facilities, add new sports courts and transform the space into a café for the university community.
As part of ongoing improvements to medical education, the university has engaged Kontra to expand the Medical Skills and Simulation Center with 24 additional simulation rooms, increasing the total to 44 and equipping them with updated training technologies.
Upgrades to research infrastructure include a contract with MAR Global to refurbish research laboratories and supply new laboratory furniture and specialised equipment.
Al-Yousif Building Materials Company has been appointed to relocate and renovate the animal research facility with an advanced design to support research activities while meeting international standards.
The King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Medical City covers about one million sqaure metres and will offer both inpatient and outpatient services, with a stated focus on internal medicine, obstetrics, surgery, paediatrics and subspecialties.
The facility is designed to integrate healthcare delivery with education and research initiatives.
