As part of an alliance, Finnish construction firm YIT has secured a contract for the second phase of the renovation of main building of the University of Helsinki in Finland.

The alliance includes YIT as the contractor, Jeskanen-Repo-Teränne Arkkitehdit for architectural design of the project and the University of Helsinki Funds is the project client.

The total worth of the project is around €40m and YIT’s share is about €37m.

Work on the second phase is scheduled to commence this month with completion planned in 2023.

The scope of work on the second phase of the project involves renovation of the part of the Main Building on Fabianinkatu, which was designed by J. S. Sirén.

The first phase of the project involves renovation of the section facing Senate Square, which was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, and two-storey sections designed by J.S. Sirén along Yliopistonkatu and Aleksanterinkatu.

Work on the first phase is scheduled to be completed this month, with commissioning expected in the autumn.

The University of Helsinki Main Building renovation project will be completed in three main phases that include the development phase, implementation phase and the after-sales responsibility phase.

The development phase commenced last year, the implementation phase will begin now, and the last phase is set to continue until 2028.

Last month, YIT started work on several residential apartment building projects in Finland and the CEE countries between April and June this year.

The largest projects started during the period include As Oy Espoon Itätuuli, As Oy Helsingin Rut, As Oy Oulun Asemantorni III, As Oy Tampereen Teatterineuvos, As Oy Vantaan Taaleri, As Oy Espoon Poseidon, As Oy Vantaan Maalari, As Oy Vantaan Kangastus, As Oy Tampereen Kuunsilta and As Oy Vaasan Keittiömestari in Finland, Linkmenu 3 in Vilnius Lithuania and Päevalille 19 in Tallin Estonia.
