BMD Constructions is set to commence construction on A$163.3m ($117.5m) Deception Bay Road Interchange upgrade project in Queensland, Australia.

The project, which forms part of the A$12.6bn ($9.08bn) Bruce Highway Upgrade Programme, will include the improvement of the existing interchange, including two new bridges over the Bruce Highway.

It will also include the removal of the existing bridge and upgrades to two intersections immediately to the east and west of the interchange.

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said that the upgrade would form a key part of the Queensland Government’s A$3.13bn ($2.2bn) to roads and transport programme for the fast-growing area, including the A$662m ($477m) Bruce Highway upgrade from Caboolture to Steve Irwin Way.

Expected to be completed in early 2023, the project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments through an 80:20 funding arrangement. The Australian government is set to provide up to A$130.6m ($94m) for the project.

Early works have to relocate water, power and telecommunications infrastructure have been completed to make way for the project to commence. The project will also create 270 construction jobs.

Upon completion, the Deception Bay Road Interchange upgrade project is expected to reduce crashes, increase interchange capacity, reduce travel time, and lower vehicle operating costs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said: “Through the Australian Government’s investment, all Queenslanders, including those travelling home and further north, can expect to see improvements in safety and capacity along the Bruce Highway.

“We are investing in our future beyond Covid-19 by delivering lasting infrastructure which will kick-start our economic recovery and benefit Australians for years to come and this project is a perfect example of that.

“Our A$100bn, 10-year infrastructure pipeline will support our economy and create jobs, particularly for those in the construction and building supply chain sectors.”
