Ground has been broken on a multi-purpose public square project as part of the £200m Becketwell regeneration project in Derby city centre, UK.

The ground-breaking ceremony of Springwell Square project was attended by main contractor GMI Construction, project developer St James Securities, representatives of Derby City Council, and other stakeholders.

This public square will serve as the centrepiece of the £200m Becketwell development.

It is being delivered as the part of the first phase of the regeneration scheme.

St James Securities had awarded a £30m contract to GMI ahead of the demolition work that began in March last year.

Springwell Square will be developed on the location of the former Central United Reformed Church, next to The Condor, a new 259 one- and two-bedroom build to rent (BTR) apartments block.

It will be operated by Grainger, and is scheduled to finish by spring 2023, reported TheBusinessDesk.com.

Second phase of the scheme will include a 3,500-capacity performance venue, Laurie House offices, Pennine Hotel, and multi-storey car park on Colyear Street, reported Insider Media.

Construction work on the performance venue is slated to begin early next year, with its completion in late 2024.

GMI divisional managing director Andy Bruce said: “Over £1m is being spent on the square and it will make a massive difference to the area, with its high-quality finish and landscaping making it a real focal point for the development.

“In terms of the apartment block itself, the interior is progressing at a great rate of Knots, and it’s a job that we’re going to be extremely proud of when it’s finished.

“It has really kick-started the re-development of the Becketwell area of Derby, which has been needed, and is a welcome boost to the East Midlands.”
