Webuild and its joint venture (JV) partner Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company (SAJCO) have secured a contract to design and construct 57km of a high-speed railway in Neom, along the north coast of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia.

This contract is valued at approximately €1.4bn.

Under the contract, the JV partners will be responsible for designing and building the majority part of the Connector, a railway linking Oxagon, which is NEOM’s centre for advanced and clean industries, with THE LINE, a linear smart city under construction in Saudi Arabia.

This contract is expected to generate more than 4,000 direct and indirect jobs in the Saudi market.

Neom is among Saudi Arabia’s various ‘Giga-Projects’ that are engaged to promote sustainable urban living.

THE LINE will feature no traditional roads or cars and will accommodate a population of up to nine million people in an area of 34km².

Following the railway’s completion, Neom will be powered completely by clean energy drawn from renewable solar, wind and hydrogen-based sources.

This JV agreement is split in a 70:30 ratio between Webuild (70) via its local branch unit Salini Saudi Arabia, and SAJCO (30).

This partnership will carry out civil works for two high-speed tracks along with two freight railway tracks, with Webuild leading the implementation of work.

The scope of the contract features viaducts, road bridges, and road and rail underpasses to facilitate train speeds of up to 230km/h.
