Morgan Sindall has initiated the refurbishment of Watford Colosseum in Watford, Hertfordshire, UK.

Watford Borough Council (WBC) selected Morgan Sindall’s Northern Home Counties segment for the extensive refurbishment project.

The project is aimed at modernising and enhancing the Grade II Listed live entertainment venue.

It is part of a broader £20m ($25.37m) development that includes Watford Town Hall and is expected to be completed in late 2024.

Morgan Sindall Construction Northern Home Counties area director Emma Curtis said: “This project is not just about protecting the past but also investing in the future and creating a multigenerational legacy.

“It will form the backbone of a new cultural quarter that will support Watford’s long-term regeneration by attracting more acts and performers as well as generating tourism, employment, business opportunities, and social value.”

Built in 1938, Watford Colosseum is claimed to have been praised by Julian Lloyd Webber as “the finest recording venue in the world.’”

The venue has been home to the British Broadcasting Corporation Concert Orchestra, as well as a recording site for numerous movie soundtracks.

Upon completion, WBC anticipates a 40% reduction in gas bills and saves 166tpa in carbon emissions due to new insulation systems and LED lighting at the site.

The transformation of Watford’s Town Hall area and Colosseum has received partial funding from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, with a £16m grant.

WBC has appointed AEG Presents to manage the entertainment location upon its reopening later this year.
