Global engineering services company Stantec has commenced the final design phase of Segment B for the South Hillsborough Pipeline project in Hillsborough County, Florida, US.

Tampa Bay Water granted the company a $14m contract amendment that involves the final design engineering and construction management at-risk support services.

The water supply project is projected to cost approximately $100m, and Segment B will meet the increased demand for potable water in Hillsborough County’s South-Central service region.

The South Hillsborough Pipeline development will provide potable water to a new connection point with Hillsborough County and deliver water to the expanding region to fulfil the significant rise in water service demands of new residents.

It will extend water delivery to the area by connecting Tampa Bay Water’s Regional Surface Water Treatment Plant to a new point of connection in South Hillsborough County.

Segment B makes up for eight of the total 26 miles of pipeline, having a design life of more than 50 years. It will link to Segment A at Fish Hawk Boulevard and end at the new county connecting point.

The nearly 72in-diameter pipes will span state and county motorways, as well as intersections as they pass across urban and rural regions.

As part of the project, Stantec is constructing specific tunnelling portions to reduce the effects on the local rural environment and the public.

Stantec senior project manager Jarah Parke said: “These expanded pipelines will transmit the water needed to serve this growing community. Our team has collaborated with Tampa Bay Water and Hillsborough County to minimise area disruptions while maximising system improvement benefits.

“Stantec and Tampa Bay Water are united in our mutual goal of enhanced water delivery and building a lasting, effective system for years to come.”
