The Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT) has selected Jacobs to serve as lead designer for the State Road (SR) 509 Stage 2 Completion Project in the US.

The SR 509 Completion Project in King County is a part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program, which includes the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County.

The latest project will complete a segment of the state’s transportation network linking Interstate 5 (I-5) and SR 509.

It is expected to forge connections between the Port of Seattle and distribution centres, ending near Sea-Tac Airport.

As the appointed lead designer, Jacobs joins forces with the design-build team spearheaded by Guy F. Atkinson Construction.

Their collective efforts will focus on the design and construction of the project.

This encompasses the development of five new bridges, one bridge modification, stormwater management, and treatment facilities.

It further comprises the construction of active transportation infrastructure supporting walking, cycling, as well as other other physical modes of travel.

The collaboration between Jacobs and Atkinson spans nearly two decades.

The two companies have provided the Washington State DOT with an array of services, including technical expertise, project delivery, and risk management.

Their partnership has previously executed multiple stages of the Puget Sound Gateway Program.

Jacobs senior vice-president Katus Watson said: “This project continues our strong collaboration with Atkinson in delivering best-in-class solutions to the Washington State Department of Transportation; all while creating vital transportation improvements that connect communities.

“Since 2005, the Jacobs/Atkinson design-build team has delivered roadway improvements that make travel smarter, safer and more connected.”

In April this year, Jacobs was chosen by the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department in Florida to design upgrades for the county’s three wastewater treatment plants.
