VolkerFitzpatrick has been appointed by the West Midlands Combined Authority to provide detailed design and construction services for the £56m University Station project in Birmingham, the UK.

Opened in 1978, the station has since then witnessed 700% increase in passenger traffic.

The project will see the station being transformed and providing a modern gateway onto the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus and a hospital site nearby.

IT is expected to support regeneration activities in the area, boost passenger capacity as well as offer improved access to the rail network for visitors to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and even after that.

The new station building will feature lifts, a ticket office, provision for a retail unit and wider platforms.

The project will also feature canopy coverage along the platforms and will be directly linked to the university campus through a new pedestrian canal bridge.

The current station building will be retained as an exit for passengers from the station.

VolkerFitzpatrick operations director Mike Evans said: “Over the last forty years this station has seen a dramatic increase in passenger numbers, which is still expected to rise in the coming years.

“Our design aim is to ensure the new station can continue to manage an increase in current capacity, but also create a vibrant, positive impression for those visiting Birmingham for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and those using the station on a daily basis, helping to provide the local community with a faster, safer and more efficient mode of transport for the region.”

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: “This station is used by thousands of people every day and is a key gateway for the city and region. We are therefore looking forward to working with VolkerFitzpatrick to turn our plans for University into a reality when construction begins next year.

“This is just one part of our wider investment in rail which includes the reopening of new lines in Birmingham and the Black Country, stationupgrades and the introduction of new rolling stock on some of our busier lines.”
