VINCI Construction UK has secured a £14.5m contract to build a new cancer centre in Macclesfield, UK for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

Under the contract, the company will be responsible for the construction of a two-storey building to house the new cancer centre.

The Christie at Macclesfield project secured planning approvals from East Cheshire Council in September last year.

The company said that the demolition works for the project were commenced in February this year, a few weeks before the Covid-19 lockdown.

The project is expected to transform cancer care unit located in Cheshire, the High Peak area of Derbyshire and parts of North Staffordshire, offering care closer to home for over 1,500 existing Christie patients annually.

According to VINCI, the new facility will bring the essential cancer services under one roof, offering local specialist to access to radiotherapy, chemotherapy, holistic support and information services, outpatient care, palliative care as well as a range of clinical trials.

The Christie at Macclesfield clinical oncology director and clinical lead Andrew Sykes said: “Our focus for the last three months has rightly been on continuing to provide safe and effective cancer care to our patients and in supporting patients who are worried about Covid-19.

“But with the first wave of the pandemic now behind us, we can once again move forward with our ambitious plans for a new cancer centre in Macclesfield.

“The new centre will deliver cancer care to the highest Christie standards, but closer to where patients live.”

Work on the new facility is anticipated to be concluded by the end of 202. The building will be ready for patients in 2022.
