A consortium of Vinci and Meridiam has secured a public-private partnership (PPP) contract to build the D4 motorway linking Příbram (Central Bohemia) to Písek (South Bohemia).
The Czech Republic’s Ministry of Transport has awarded the CZK16.5bn ($754m) contract to the consortium, which is led by VINCI Highways. It is said to be the first PPP motorway contract awarded in the Czech Republic.
The scope of the contract will involve design, finance, construct, operate and maintain a new 32km motorway and the conversion of 17km of existing infrastructure into a dual two-lane carriageway.
It will be executed using a full building information modelling (BIM) approach, which is claimed to be the first in the country for a road construction project.
The 28-year PPP motorway contract includes nearly four years of construction work, which will be completed by Eurovia CS, a Czech subsidiary of Eurovia (VINCI).
The new motorway project will use advanced technologies and is expected to provide a high level of road safety, comfort for motorists and improved traffic conditions and traffic flow, which will reduce congestion and pollution.

By GlobalDataUpon completion, the new highway is expected to provide improved road connectivity between rural South Bohemia and Prague while fostering economic and social development, improving traffic conditions on the country’s major commercial routes, especially towards the neighbouring Germany and Austria.
Additionally, VINCI Highways is appointed to operate and maintain the new motorway.
As part of the project, new storm water retention ponds and wildlife crossings will be constructed to preserve biodiversity.
Earlier this year, the VINCI and Meridiam JV signed an agreement for the development of nearly €1.3bn Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway project in Kenya.
