Norway’s Bergen municipality and Veidekke have signed a contract to expand and improve the Espeland water purification facility.

The estimated value of this design and build contract is Nkr240m ($22.30m), exclusive of VAT.

The water purification plant will be updated with a new water purification method to meet current hygiene standards while boosting its overall capacity.

Specifically, this will comprise a colour-removal step in processing crude water taken from the lake of Svartavatnet, as well as an increase in the maximum water output from 67,000m³ to 80,000m³ per 24 hours.

The intake will be refurbished to lessen the facility’s reliance on water production to optimise the Espeland power plant.

Veidekke Bygg Bergen district manager Thor Småbrekke said: “The supply of drinking water from the Gullfjellet mountain is well known to many residents in the Bergen area as a delicious and stable [source of water], and now we are going to make it even better.

The scope of the contract includes rebuilding work on the new purification plant, groundworks, and outdoor works, including the rerouting and installation of new outdoor infrastructure.

Bergen Water Authority project manager Oddbjørn Andersen said: “The Bergen Water Authority looks forward to a positive partnership with Veidekke on what is a critical project in the shape of a new purification plant for the municipality of Bergen and its residents.”

Construction work is expected to start in the coming months, with completion set for 2027.
