The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has awarded a contract for the Umm Suqeim Street improvement project in the United Arab Emirates-based city.

The company that secured the contract for this upgrade has not been named.

This initiative is in line with the directives of Dubai Vice-President, Prime Minister, and Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The project, which costs Dh332m ($90.39m), aims to enhance connectivity and ensure smooth traffic flow in the region.

RTA director general and chair of the board of executive directors Mattar Al Tayer stated that the Umm Suqeim Street project is anticipated to improve the connectivity between both transverse and vertical streets.

The project spans 4.6km from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

It will include the construction of a new 800m-long tunnel with four lanes in each direction to improve the intersection with Al Barsha South Street near Kings School, as well as a signalised surface intersection.

Al Tayer said: “This project aims to improve the connectivity of four major traffic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

“It will enhance the capacity of the streets to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensure a smoother flow of traffic, and significantly reduce the travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes. This project will serve various residential and developments areas, including Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills.”

The upgrade is part of the RTA’s ongoing efforts to upgrade the corridor, which began with the widening of Umm Suqeim Street.
