CityFibre, a UK-based digital infrastructure provider, has awarded construction contracts worth £1.5bn for full-fibre rollouts across 27 towns and cities, addressing nearly three million premises.

The new contracts will create about 3,750 new local network construction jobs. These will be part of a three-year recruitment and training programme, which will provide jobs to about 10,000 people.

The new jobs that will be created will be part of the company’s previously announced recruitment and training programme.

CityFibre stated that the completion of its Accelerated Tender Awards Programme (ATAP) brings the total build contracts to up to £2.5bn.

The company now has 26 build partners under contract and its construction supply chain is secured for rollouts that target more than five million premises across 66 towns and cities. The projects are scheduled to be put together by summer next year.

CityFibre began awarding contracts for full-fibre rollout since the Gigabit City Investment Programme that began in 2018.

It plans to launch the second phase of the ATAP by the end of this year. With the help of ATAP, the company will award build contracts for up to a further three million premises.

With the second phase, CityFibre will be able to meet its commitment of providing construction resource to up to eight million as per the Gigabit City Investment Programme.

CityFibre stated that the Gigabit City Investment Programme is on track to have substantially completed by 2025 in support of the Government’s target for national coverage.

CityFibre’s rapid scaling of the rollout is being supported by Bechtel, an engineering, construction and project management firm.

The engineering services firm has been appointed recently to accelerate the mobilisation of construction partners and maximise the productivity of each rollout project.

CityFibre CEO Greg Mesch said: “By awarding these full-fibre network construction contracts, we can ensure we have the construction resources we need to get the job done, bringing world-class digital infrastructure a step closer to millions across the UK.

“Each contract represents hundreds of jobs and upskilling opportunities for local people, building the networks Britain needs to survive and to thrive in a digital age.”
