The Department for Transport (DfT) of the UK has approved £60m financing for the work on A361, known as the North Devon Link Road.
The A361, a key road connecting Devon with the rest of the UK, forms part of the government’s wider plans to increase the transportation infrastructure across the country.
The upgrade work on the A361 will focus on a 7.7km stretch between South Molton and Barnstaple.
The route will be upgraded with a wider carriageway that will also improve overtaking opportunities, safety and resilience.
The funding will be utilised to upgrade the capacity of the North Devon Link Road as well as 8 key junctions to boost active travel.
Additionally, facilities for pedestrians and cyclists will be introduced along the route.

By GlobalDataSlated to commence this month, the modernisation and upgrade works on the North Devon Link Road will reduce congestion and boost the local economy.
Led by Devon County Council, the project will reduce journey times while boosting connectivity and will boost the local economy by supporting plans to build 6,700 new homes in the region.
The government said that the road provides the most direct connection between North and South Devon and will be a key route connecting the Southwest to the rest of the UK.
Devon County Council Infrastructure, Development and Waste cabinet member Councillor Andrea Davis said: “This announcement is fantastic news for local residents and for Devon’s economy. The upgrade of this road is the biggest transport investment in north Devon for a generation.
“It will help unlock the true potential of the local economy in northern Devon, and with the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, that’s vital at this time.”
