The University of California (UC), Merced, in the US has completed the construction on a $1.2bn expansion project at the institution’s campus.

The UC Merced 2020 Project, which is claimed to be the largest public-private partnership (P3) social infrastructure project, features new classrooms, laboratories, offices, 1,700 beds of student housing, recreation facilities student life facilities and infrastructure.

The first phase of the project was delivered in mid-July 2018. It comprised a 600 seat dining facility, 20 classrooms and 729 new beds of undergraduate student housing.

The second phase of the project was delivered in mid-2019.

UC Merced interim chancellor Nathan Brostrom said: “This project will enable UC's newest and fastest-growing campus to serve up to 10,000 students and increase access to the exceptional research, teaching, and public service opportunities provided by the most respected public university system in the world.”

The P3 project development team includes Plenary Group which served as lead developer, equity provider and financial arranger; Webcor Construction as lead contractor; Skidmore Owings & Merrill as lead campus planner; and Johnson Controls as lead operations and management firm.

Webcor chief operations officer Matt Rossie said: "The project was conceived as a design, build, finance, operate, and maintain (DBFOM) project.

"The University provided a vision. The Plenary Properties Merced team turned the vision into designs, procured subcontractors, installed the infrastructure, constructed the buildings, and commissioned the building systems – all in less than four years."

Covering an area of 1.2 million gross ft2, the expansion project is intended to nearly doubled the campus’ physical capacity and allow enrollment growth to 10,000 students.
