Strabag JV wins role on €1.3bn A49 motorway project in Germany

Construction technology group Strabag, in a joint venture with Leonhard Weiss, has secured €700m contract for the construction of a 31km section of the A49 public-private partnership motorway project in Germany.

Under the contract, the joint venture will be responsible for designing, building, financing, operation and maintenance of new section – Schwalmstadt-Ohmtal Dreieck, located in the German State of Hesse.

The scope of work includes the four-lane gap closure in concrete and the reworking of the A5 along 1.5km section at the Ohmtal intersection.

In addition to the construction of a 31km long section of the A49 motorway, the €1.3bn project includes the planning, co-financing, operation and maintenance of a nearly 62km section of the A49 between the Fritzlar junction and the Ohmtal A5/A49 interchange.

The client is the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the State of Hesse, represented by Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau (DEGES).

A49 Autobahngesellschaft, a 50-50 joint venture between STRABAG Infrastrukturprojekt and Meridiam Investments, has been specifically established to deliver the A49 motorway project.

The project is backed by financing from Germany’s KfW IPEX-Bank, the European Investment Bank (EIB), Germany’s MEAG, KBC Bank, Niederlassung Deutschland, and ČSOB.

The A49 project, which is divided into four sections, forms part of a comprehensive German Federal Government infrastructure programme, which aims to partially develop, modernise and upgrade 20 key sections of the national road network.

Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: “We are pleased about the renewed trust in our ability to successfully realise large infrastructure projects in public-private partnerships, something we are already demonstrating in Germany with the A8 and A5 motorways.”
