Stantec, a Canada-based design firm, has been appointed to offer planning, design, and conformance (PDC) services for the new South Niagara Hospital in Ontario, Canada.

Stantec said that its healthcare team earlier completed Niagara Health’s campus plan. The team is now offering the illustrative schematic design, as well as detailed output specifications for the full range of design and construction requirements.

The Canadian firm will assess conformance to design and construction requirements for the new hospital.

Sprawling over a 49.8-acre green-field site in Niagara Falls, the South Niagara Hospital will cover an area of 1.3 million ft².

The 470-bed South Niagara Hospital will feature centres of excellence specialising in stroke, complex care, geriatric and psychogeriatrics, and wellness in ageing.

The full acute care hospital will also include a 24/7 emergency department and services for critical care, surgical, mental health and addiction, kidney care and dialysis, and testing and research.

Once opened in 2027, the hospital will become one of the first healthcare facilities in Canada to achieve WELL certification.

Stantec’s Health sector senior principal John Steven said: “In designing South Niagara Hospital, our team will deploy the latest best practices in healthcare design to create a welcoming, sustainable, and efficient facility for the residents of Niagara Falls and the surrounding area.

“The current pandemic has underlined the need to expand capacity and access to critical healthcare services within our existing health systems. We’re excited to continue our work with Niagara Health to support the health and well-being of the community.”

Stantec has provided PDC services for several healthcare facilities that are recently opened in Eastern Canada. The facilities include Groves Memorial Community Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital, Milton District Hospital and Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for Halton Healthcare Services, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care, and Bridgepoint Health Redevelopment.
