Stantec, an integrated architecture and engineering company, has been chosen to design the Metropolis at Metrotown redevelopment project in Canada.

The project aims to transform a retail centre into a new city centre in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The transformation of Burnaby’s urban landscape is set to span several years.

The initial phase is targeting seven distinct parcels across the Northwest, Southwest, Southeast, and Eastern segments of the master plan.

Stantec will serve as the executive architect for the master plan and guide the integrated design team.

The development of the Metropolis’ 35-acre site will occur in phases, with an incremental construction approach.

The project aims to add 20% affordable units and retail, expand the Metrotower office complex, and add open spaces, public parks, and new entertainment and cultural venues.

It will also focus on pedestrian mobility and sustainable living. Stantec plans to extend bicycle routes and pedestrian pathways to promote eco-friendly transportation.

The company’s strategy also includes optimising resource flows, reducing water consumption, and regenerating local ecosystems.

It will further introduce green streets to boost tree coverage and ecological health.

The retail sector is planned to be at the core of the redevelopment and is expected to increase liveable density and strengthen community connections.

Last month, Stantec completed the acquisition of England-based integrated engineering design company Hydrock for an undisclosed amount.

This move is anticipated to enhance Stantec’s UK workforce by more than 30% and strengthen its market position in the energy, buildings, and infrastructure sectors.
