St James Securities has filed a planning application with Derby City Council for a new entertainment and events venue at Becketwell in Derby, the UK.

Part of Becketwell regeneration scheme, the new venue will be located on the former Pink Coconut nightclub and Laurie House offices site.

It will have fully flexible, scalable space to host different events including stand-up comedy, concerts, conferences, family shows, musical theatre, as well as other exhibitions.

The main auditorium at the new performance venue will have a maximum (seated and standing) capacity of 3,500 with fully seated layout for up to 2,100.

It will be owned by Derby City Council and will be operated by ASM Global, a venue and event management company.

The project is expected to create approximately 200 jobs and generate over £10m revenue per year for the area.

St James Securities plans to start construction on the new performance venue in early 2022 following the receipt of planning consent.

The venue is planned to be handed over to the operator in 2024.

St James Securities managing director Oliver Quarmby said: “A new large-scale venue is a key component of Derby’s masterplan for the city centre which has been developed collaboratively between the public and private sectors and we are tremendously excited to be working on this ambitious scheme to bring an outstanding, modern performance venue to the city.

“We have created a great scheme which will fill a significant gap in the city’s cultural landscape. This flexible venue will cater for major music and comedy acts as well as a strong programme of theatre content. The conference and events capability will support the growth of the business community in the region.”

Work on the first phase of the Becketwell regeneration scheme is already underway.

The masterplan will include 259 build to rent apartments on the former Debenhams store site on Victoria Street as well as a new public square.
