SmartCentres Real Estate Investment Trust has unveiled plans for ArtWalk, the new mixed-use art district in the SmartVMC development of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC), Canada.
The 100-acre, 20-million-square-feet SmartVMC city centre is located close to major thoroughfares, including Highways 7, 400 and 407.

Planned to be developed by SmartCentres’ wholly-owned in-house residential development brand SmartLiving, the ArtWalk district will be built in four separate phases.
The new art district, which will be bordered by Portage Parkway to the north and Apple Mill Road to the south, will include 38-storey and 18-storey towers on top of a shared podium, as well as a separate six-storey mixed-use residence with retail at grade.
It will also include urban amenities and a nine-acre central park.

Hariri Pontarini Architects has been selected to lead both the architecture and interiors for the initial phase of the ArtWalk district, which will feature a variety of heights, floorplates and suite sizes.
ArtWalk’s amenities include multiple outdoor terraces with gardens, an outdoor dining space where people can have BBQs, an outdoor movie area, lounge seating that includes firepits.
Other features of the block include an indoor/outdoor children’s play area and a 2,500ft² co-working space facing the courtyard.
