Swedish construction firm Skanska has secured a contract from the Florida Department of Transportation to design and construct a new interchange at Interstate 75 (I-75) and Big Bend Road in Hillsborough County, Florida, the US.

This contract is valued at $82m and will be included in the US order bookings for Q3 2021.

The scope of project work involves widening and reconstruction of the Big Bend Road as well as the reconfiguration of I-75 ramps.

The transformation of the new interchange will improve traffic flow and reduce delays.

The improvements will also include upgrades to roadway lighting, addition of accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists, replacement of existing bridges, and adjustment as well as installation of wet utilities.

This will transform the Big Bend Road to a six-lane urban highway from an existing four-lane rural roadway.

Construction work of the new interchange is anticipated to be completed by August 2024.

Recently, Skanska completed construction of the new parking garage for Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia.

The new garage features three levels below grade and six levels above grade to accommodate nearly 1,700 cars.

The company has also commenced construction of the new six-storey outpatient pavilion.

The new 245,000ft2 facility will feature radiology and imaging suites, clinics for examinations, physical therapy examination and treatment rooms, as well as six operating rooms.

The new pavilion and garage will provide direct and easy access for patients from the entry at the parking garage to treatment areas.

Skanska Washington D.C. building operations general manager and executive vice president Dale Kopnitsky said: “It is an honor for Skanska to be part of the team bringing the new Virginia Hospital Center garage and patient tower to life.

“As Skanska’s largest healthcare project in the region, this garage completion signifies the progress we are making in delivering these much-needed buildings to the community.”
