Swedish construction firm Skanska has secured a $70.5m contract from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the reconstruction of the Interstate 4 (I-4) between State Road 557 (SR 557) interchange in Central Florida.

Skanska has been tasked with the responsibility to transform the configuration of the interchange from an existing partial cloverleaf to a diamond configuration.

A new bridge will be built to carry the SR 557 traffic over the newly widened I-4 to accommodate future tolled express lanes and a high-speed rail (HSR) corridor.

Designed by engineering firm DRMP, the roadway project is expected to improve the traffic patterns while improving the safety of motorists.

Skanska plans to begin construction next month and expects the construction will be completed by the summer of 2023.

Skanska USA Civil Southeast operations executive vice president Brian Stieritz said: “With Florida’s population steadily rising, the state’s infrastructure needs improvements to accommodate the pace of growth and increase motorist safety, particularly in the Central Florida region.

“These roadway improvements along I-4 at the interchange will offer the more than 100,000 motorists who use this roadway daily a safer and more efficient driving experience for decades to come.”

Furthermore, the plan includes building wildlife fending along the I-4, which will channelise the wildlife in the region to two bridges to cross the I-4 roadway.
