A joint venture consisting of construction firm Skanska has secured a contract from Maryland Department of Transportation to build a new bridge over the Potomac River in the US.
The joint venture, which also includes Corman Kokosing Construction and McLean Contracting, will be responsible for design and construction of the new Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton bridge. Skanska’s share of the contract is valued at SEK 2.9bn ($301m).
The new 3km, four-lane structure will replace the existing, two-lane bridge that connects Newburg in Maryland, and Dahlgren in Virginia.
Additionally, the project will include road realignment and development of nearly 800m on either side of the bridge. It will also deploy an All-Electronic Tolling (AET) system.
Once the construction of the new bridge and roadway is finished, the existing bridge will be destroyed to build artificial reefs in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
Construction of the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge is expected to commence in March 2020, with the new bridge expected to start operations by 2023.

The Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge is the second oldest of the Maryland Transportation Authority’s (MDTA) seven facilities.
Located on the US 301 over the Potomac River, the existing bridge was built between March 1938 and December 1940.
The estimated cost to develop the 1.7 miles of the two-lane bridge was $5m.
In January, Grady Health System (Grady) awarded a $113m contract to Skanska and H.J. Russell & Company joint venture (JV) to construct a new surgery and clinic centre in Atlanta in the US state of Georgia.
Under the contract, the JV will be responsible for the construction of a new surgery and clinic centre called Center for Advance Surgical Services (CASS).
Skanska specialises in construction, civil infrastructure and developing commercial properties in select US markets.
