LaGuardia Airport in New York, US has announced the opening of the second light-filled concourse and seven new gates at Terminal B.

The move is part of the LaGuardia Airport’s ongoing $8bn transformation project.

Designed to connect to the Terminal B Arrivals and Departures hall by an elevated pedestrian bridge, the new concourse comprises an indoor park, touchless restrooms and other amenities.

It will house the future American Airlines Admirals Club and will mainly serve American Airlines.

Additionally, the first seven new gates in the new Western Concourse are planned to be operational from next week.

LaGuardia Airport will continue to demolish the original terminal and open the remaining gates of the concourses through 2022.

LaGuardia Gateway Partners CEO Stewart Steeves said: “The opening of the Western Concourse is yet another milestone that we’re proud to have completed in the overall redevelopment of Terminal B.”

The $5.1bn LaGuardia Terminal B redevelopment project includes a new 35-gate terminal, a Central Hall, a parking garage, related roadways and supporting infrastructure.

Commenting on the launch, New York Governor Cuomo said: “With the opening of this new concourse, LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B is hitting two major milestones in one summer and moving closer to its full transformation into a 21st-century travel facility.

“LaGuardia Airport is going to be the first new airport in the United States in 25 years, and we’re building it while still operating the old airport. Travellers coming to New York should expect nothing less than a world-class experience, and that is what we are delivering with this modernisation project.”

Last month, the airport announced the opening of the 850,000ft² Arrivals and Departures Hall with new concessions and traveller amenities.

The hall features increased space for passengers to move more safely and efficiently during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.
