Saint Mary’s College, a private college in Notre Dame, Indiana, US, founded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, has announced the beginning of construction of a new Heritage and Research Center (HARC).
The start of construction work was marked by an official ground-breaking ceremony held at the new facility’s site behind the Welcome Center off The Avenue on 26 July 2024.
HARC will be home to the histories and collections of a total of nine women’s religious congregations.
Additionally, the facility will support research, study, and scholarship while showcasing the lives and ministries of thousands of religious sisters.
HARC, which is backed by each participating congregation, will function as an independent entity, with an executive director, curators, and archivists responsible for managing the centre’s collections, exhibits, and programming.
The new facility is also a part of the National Archives Project for Women Religious, which will allow it to share a technology platform with three other archival hubs, providing users access to all four repositories.

Meanwhile, the building that formerly housed the College’s Welcome Center will be revamped to accommodate the new archival centre.
Construction is also expected to start on an expansion at the rear of the building.
Saint Mary’s Mission vice-president Julianne Wallace said: “When complete, the new facility will provide great research opportunities for our faculty and students. We look forward to the completion of this transformative initiative and the academic enrichment it will bring to our campus.”
