Robertson Construction Yorkshire & East Midlands has initiated construction works on the Extra Care development in Cleckheaton, Kirklees, UK, for Housing 21.

Robertson Group, the main contractor for the project, is collaborating with Brewster Bye Architects.

Housing 21, an ‘extra care’ provider, is spearheading the £20m ($25.36m) scheme working with Kirklees Council.

Meanwhile, Homes England is contributing a grant exceeding £7m.

To mark the commencement of construction, a ground-breaking ceremony was held, which was attended by representatives from Kirklees Council, Housing 21, and Homes England.

Robertson Construction Yorkshire & East Midlands regional managing director Jonathan Sizer said: “With a focus on supporting the health and well-being of residents, the development will feature attractive facilities that allow independence while benefiting and connecting the local community.

“As delivery partner, we will ensure that we create quality homes and facilities that meet the needs and priorities of residents, staff and the wider community. This development will be an asset to Cleckheaton and marks our first project with Housing 21.”

The development, situated off Kenmore Drive, will feature 80 homes, including 61 one-bedroom and 19 two-bedroom apartments, with all units to be offered for social rent.

It will offer residents a range of modern communal spaces, including a residents’ lounge, an on-site café, and a hair salon.

Housing 21 Development and Delivery director Bridget Faughnan-Bing said: “This development will provide homes that will enable local older people to live independently for longer and still remain within the community that they know and love.”

The Extra Care housing scheme is expected to be completed in early 2026.

In January this year, Robertson Construction, along with WEPCo and Flintshire County Council, celebrated a major milestone at the Mynydd Isa Campus by topping-out the building.

Once finished, the campus is expected to cater to more than 1,300 students aged three to 16.
