Puurakentajat Group has partnered with Finnish S-Bank to construct two solid wood apartment buildings in Turku, Finland.

Referred to as the Portinvartija buildings, the project will be carried out in alliance with a property fund managed by FIM Asset Management, which is a unit of S-Bank, Puurakentajat said.

Spanning more than 4,400m2, the wooden apartment buildings will house 58 apartments along with commercial space on the street level. Additionally, residential underground parking will be built.

This project is a continuum of the Lyhdynkantaja apartment building that Puurakentajat previously constructed on the same block.

At present, the design work for the project is being finalised, with ground and foundation work scheduled to be finished by the start of next year.

The construction phase for the wooden frame is expected to commence in March next year.

Puurakentajat added that the 58 new apartments and commercial premises will be ready to be occupied during winter 2022–2023.

Puurakentajat CEO Mikko Leino said: “Wood construction is now in high demand. Consumers increasingly value ecological and healthy modes of living. Solid wood allows for construction without the use of moisture barrier plastic sheeting.

“In addition, it has the best carbon sequestration capacity when compared to any other construction method, which is essential in combating climate change. This block of three solid wood apartment buildings will also be an architecturally interesting, aesthetic entity.”

The project will be managed and supervised by Rakennuttajatoimisto HTJ Oy while Oy Rakennuspartio is the main contractor.

Schauman Arkkitehdit Oy is the lead designer and Puurakentajat Suunnittelu is the structural designer.
