Austrian construction company PORR has secured a €115m (PLN509m) contract for the design and construction of the S16 expressway Olsztyn-Ełk in the section between BorkiWielkie and Mrągowo.

The contract has been awarded by the Polish General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

The 13km-long expressway section is expected to be built within three years along with the construction of the Mrągowo ring road.

Considered to play an important role in the transport system of the entire region, the S16 is claimed to be the ‘backbone’ of Warmia and Mazury.

The contract includes the design and construction of a 13km-long dual-carriageway express road running from BorkiWielkie to Mrągowo with two lanes in both directions, paved over with asphalt, along with Mrągowo’s ring road.

Some sections on the expressway could be built as single-carriageway roads conforming to the Polish ‘GP class’ (fast traffic trunk roads). As per the contract, retention basins, animal crossings, noise barriers and crash barriers will also be built.

PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said: “With the S16 we have secured another major infrastructure project in Poland. The section is an important traffic hub with enormous importance for the region, the country and international traffic.

“This is a perfect fit for our skillset and gives us the opportunity to once again demonstrate our comprehensive expertise in road and infrastructure construction.”

PORR stated that the contract will be completed within 36 months from the date of signing the contract, which is scheduled in the fourth quarter of 2023.

After the contract is signed, design works will begin right away and the construction is expected to begin in the second half of next year.

In May this year, PORR and Mota-Engil Central Europe had signed a contract with GDDKiA to design and build the 15km-long section of the S1 expressway between Oświęcim and Dankowice.

Worth €217m, the contract is the longest of the three sections planned as part of the new S1 between Mysłowice and Bielsko-Biała.

The consortium of PORR and Mota-Engil Central Europe will design and build the dual-carriage expressway in asphalt construction with two lanes in each direction and space reserved for a third lane (in the central reservation).
