Swedish construction and civil engineering firm Peab has secured a contract worth $61.2m (SEK517m) from City of Gothenburg Property Management to construct a new middle school in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The project involves demolition of old Lundby High School and construction of a new school building to accommodate 600 students in seven to nine grades and further 20 students in vocational school.

The scope of work also includes construction of two sports halls with capacity of 1,000 spectators along with an arts school.

Peab stated that the aula and lobby of the old high school building will be retained as a meeting place for Lundby’s cultural events.

Work on the project is expected to be completed in November 2023.

City of Gothenburg Property Management area manager Lina Cavallin said: “We’re thrilled to finally start up full production of a new meeting place in Lundby for the citizens of Gothenburg and together with Peab be able to create environments for learning, physical activity and creativity, spheres where there is room to live and breathe.”

This project is included in a strategic partnering contract for two schools along with an option for two additional schools.

Glöstorp School, the first school in the contract, is planed to be completed soon and is set to be ready for students’ occupancy in the fall term this year.

In a separate development, Peab has been awarded a $30m (SEK249m) contract by SCA Logistics to construct a new container port in Sundsvall.

To be built adjacent to the new Sundsvall Logistics Park in Tunadal Port, the new container port is being constructed to meet the growing demand for paper pulp and sawn wood products.
