Nucor, a US-based manufacturer of steel and related products, has broken ground on a $1.7bn steel plate manufacturing mill in Meade County, South Dakota, the US.

The new steel mill, dubbed Nucor Steel Brandenburg, will be located in the Buttermilk Falls Industrial Park along the Ohio River in Brandenburg.

The 1.5 millionft2 facility will have an estimated annual steel plate production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes.

The company said that the project is expected to create nearly 400 full-time jobs and employ approximately 1,500 contractors during the construction phase.

The positions include equipment operators, production specialists, safety and environmental technicians, engineers as well as office support staff.

During the construction phase, the project is also expected to create an average of 960 temporary jobs and around 1,500 jobs at the peak phase.

The Nucor Steel Brandenburg is expected to be opened in 2022.

Nucor president and CEO Leon Topalian said: "A core part of our company mission is to support the communities where we live and work. We have been doing business in the state for more than a decade and have found that the people of Kentucky share our company's values of hard work, determination and teamwork.

"We thank Gov. Beshear, his administration and local officials in Meade County for their support of this project. We look forward to being a part of the Brandenburg community for decades to come."

Furthermore, the location along the Ohio River is expected to provide logistical advantages to Nucor in sourcing the direct-reduced iron and scrap steel by barge.

Recently, the company completed the first phase of an $826m expansion project at its Nucor Steel Gallatin mill in Ghent, Kentucky.
