The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has selected architecture practice AHR for the refurbishment and extension of its Preston campus.
Under the £8.15m design project, AHR will expand UCLan’s Foster Building to include more space for break-out activities and informal spaces to promote social learning, reported Architectsjournal.com.
The Greenbank and Harrington buildings will also be given a new look with glass roofs and an indoor garden, as well as moveable furniture to cater to students' needs.
AHR will lead a team of 13 designers to collaborate with the university’s chief operating officer Michael Ahern and the student union president Sana Iqbal.
AHR's regional director Robert Hopkins was quoted by Architectsjournal as saying: “The university experience is so much broader than formal learning and UCLan has recognised this in the social space project.
“It is an exciting project to be working on, collaborating so closely with the student body to ensure these spaces deliver exactly what they want, resulting in a campus they will stay on for longer and a better student experience overall.”
Subject to planning permission, the project is expected to commence in November and to be completed next year. The project is a part of UCLan’s £200m remodelling plan.
