Turkish architecture firm Tabanlioglu’s Loft Gardens Project, a residential tower in Istanbul, Turkey, was among the 13 winners of the RIBA International Awards 2011.

Tabanlioglu is the first Turkish architecture firm to receive a RIBA International Award.

The 21-storey residential building takes the Miesian tower model and subtly humanises it by manipulating its pure shape into a modulating inhabited form, according to the judges.

Another Middle Eastern building to be recognised was Foster + Partner’s Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi.

The RIBA International Awards, launched in 2005, honour outstanding buildings outside the UK.
