Swedish construction and development firm Skanska has secured a £750m main works contract for phase two of the £3bn redevelopment of London’s Battersea Power Station in the UK.

Skanska is expected to start the enabling packages for the main activity in March 2015, while works on the power station are expected to be completed in 2019.

The redevelopment project will also include bids from Balfour Beatty, Lend Lease and Mace.

"Battersea Power Station will feature retail and events space on the lower floors, 58,000m² of offices above and 254 flats."

Mace has been in charge of the preliminary works of Battersea station since its appointment as preliminary works construction manager in October 2013, and the site handover from Mace to Skanska will be complete by the end of next month.

Battersea Power Station Development Company CEO Philip Gullett said: "Skanska’s appointment to restore and refurbish the power station is further demonstration of our shareholders’ commitment to the development and a major step towards opening up the Battersea Power Station to the public.

"Skanska is a leading contractor, with the experience and expertise to undertake the work required on this grade two listed iconic building."

As construction manager, Mace has been involved in the repair and restoration of the historic structure itself, including the chimneys.

Detailed designs of the station redevelopment have been led by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. Following the reopening in 2019, Battersea Power Station will feature retail and events space on the lower floors, 58,000m² of offices above and 254 flats in the upper eschalons of the building.
