Skanska has signed a contract worth SEK690m ($101m) to complete the construction of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Science in Miami, Florida, US.

Located in Museum Park in downtown Miami, the new 23,000m² Frost Museum of Science will replace the existing museum that was opened in 1960.

According to the company, the museum is targeting a LEED Platinum rating.

Construction of the museum commenced in May 2014 and is expected to be completed in summer 2016.

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science was formerly known as the Miami Science Museum and contains the Space-Transit Planetarium, Weintraub Observatory, a Sea Lab and the Falcon Batchelor Bird of Prey Center.

Designed by Grimshaw Architects of London/New York, the new museum is said to be an example of best practice in energy management and green design.

The building increases its waterfront site with plenty of sunlight and prevailing breezes and offers indoor and outdoor experiences and views.

Activities offered at the building include training programmes, encounters with scientists and participation in research and a fully digital environment that will provide personalised information for visitors throughout their visits and create opportunities for social exchange.

The latest contract will be included in order bookings for Skanska USA Building for the fourth quarter of 2014.

Skanska USA comprises four business units: Skanska USA Building, Skanska USA Civil, Skanska Infrastructure Development North America and Skanska USA Commercial Development.
